Nihonbashi : a business district in Tokyo
Nihonbashi is a traditional area in many senses regarding economics, trade and history, centered on the Nihonbashi Bridge : an important cultural asset of Japan, the head office of The Bank of Japan and Tokyo Stock Exchange is located here.
Along with being Japan’s financial district, there are many old-established department stores including Mitsukoshi and Takashimaya.
Due to the recent redevelopment, the number of large-scale buildings has been increasing such as Coredo Nihonbashi and Nihonbashi Mitsui Tower.
On the other hand, there still remains the more rustic touch of Shitamachi (old Tokyo downtown) with places like Ningyocho and Wholesale District.
Nihonbashi is an area where the heart of Japan’s economy and finance fuses with history and tradition.
In addition to the Nihonbashi Bridge and The Bank of Tokyo’s head office, a lot of western-styled architectural buildings of historic significance remain including the Mitsui Main Building and Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store. This western influence is another visual attraction of this town.
